How to make corn hole boards for football season

Corn Hole Boards 5

Football season is here and well, if you are like me, you’re dating, married or surrounded by someone who is extremely excited to have it back. Although football season is fun, I’m excited for fall weather, pumpkin everything and gatherings with friends.

As Simply Jessica Marie says with this adorable print, “you watch football, I’ll drink mimosas”, AMEN girl, I could not agree more!

As a fun way to enjoy football season, we like to gather with our friends, drink and play corn hole.

We’ve made various corn hole boards over the years, from tailgating at the Jags games to backyard BBQs. There’s always a good excuse get outside, especially as the weather cools down, and play corn hole! With some material from Home Depot or Lowes it is really easy to make these yourself, says the gal that doesn’t actually build it :O

Material:

  • Two 48-inch x 24-inch pieces of 1/2-inch plywood
  • Four 8-foot 2 x 4s
  • Box of 2 1/2-inch deck screws
  • Four 3/8-inch carriage bolts with washers and nuts

Tools:

  • Miter saw
  • Jigsaw
  • Drill
  • Speed square
  • Compass
  • Paint
  • Sandpaper
  • Painters Tape

Directions:

  1. Cut the 8-foot 2 x 4s, so you have two 48-inch pieces and two 21-inch pieces.
  2. Attach your 48-inch and 21-inch boards together using your screws. Ensure your corners are square by using the speed square. Pre-drilling the holes makes it easier to add the screws.
  3. Repeat step two for all four corners to create the base of the rectangle box.
  4. Before attaching the top, do a final check to make sure the top of the board sits square on the box frame. If there are any issues with the alignment, either rework the base or sand the problem area. If the plywood is larger than 48 x 24 inches, cut it down to size using a circular saw and double check to ensure everything aligns.
  5. Once the base and top align perfectly, attach it to the base using wood glue along the top of the 2 x 4 frame and screws. You should have 8 screws in the top of the board, one in each corner and in the middle of each side.
  6. To identify the circle, measure 9 inches from the top and 12 inches in to get your center point. Once you identify the center, use the compass to draw a circle with a 6-inch diameter.
  7. Using the jigsaw, cut the hole. For this step, you’ll need to go slow and guide the jigsaw to carefully cut an even circle.
  8. Sand the inside of the circle with the sandpaper to eliminate any rough edges.
  9. Cut two more pieces of the 2 x 4 into 12-inch legs. These will need to be rounded on one side to allow movement for the leg to swing up and down.
  10. Drill a 3/8-inch hole into the center point where the curve starts on the leg and drill a 3/8-inch hole 3 1/2-inches down and centered from the top of the board.
  11. Using a 3/8 inch carriage bolt secure the foot to the corn hole box. Secure it using a locking washer and nut.
  12. Paint the boards – have fun with it! This can be any design you want. Go for your favorite team colors, add in a logo or paint it a neutral color like I did, so it matches your decor!

We used regular wall paint that we rolled on, spray paint works just as well. Be sure to prime it first, this will help the paint look finished and even on the boards. For the primer, we used a spray on prime, making it much easier to apply all over.

Don’t forget to get bean bags! We ordered ours here.

Bring these to your next tailgate, backyard BBQ or a picnic at the park, these are great for having fun outside!

When hanging out with friends in the backyard or tailgating, I like to keep my wardrobe choice comfortable and easy. This outfit is a go-to for me on the weekends. I love the fit of the New York and Co 7th Avenue shorts and this adorable top that I totally dress up or down depending on the occasion. And, say hello to my favorite pair of shoes, the Ked Cali Slip-On, seriously so comfortable and stylish, these have become my new run-around, explore town shoes.
