I know it is only Tuesday morning, but it is perfectly acceptable to start thinking about your 5pm cocktail! Normally, I would go for a nice glass of red wine at the end of the night, but this heat has me craving something a little more refreshing. Thus, enter the perfect red sangria! A chilled red wine with fresh fruits and brandy, yes please! This easy to make and ready to serve concoction is perfect for sipping throughout the week or prepping ahead of time for summer gatherings {like book club tomorrow night with the ladies!}
There are many recipes out there, all with different spins on how to make sangria. This recipe that I am sharing with you is adopted from a few different recipes, creating the perfect red sangria, that’s not too sweet! {If a sweeter sangria is your thing, use a Malbec or Merlot}
INGRIDENTS
- 1 bottle of red wine (I prefer a dry red, like a Cab)
- 1 cup of pomegranate juice (I use cran-pomegranate juice from Ocean Spray)
- 1/2 cup of brandy
- 1/4 cup of sugar
- 1 apple, sliced
- 1 orange, sliced
- 6 strawberries, sliced
- 1/2 cup of tonic or sparkling water
DIRECTIONS
- Cut up the fruit into slices and/or wedges, leaving the skin on for the oranges. Add the cut fruit to the pitcher.
- Add in the brandy, sugar, pomegranate juice and wine by pouring it over the fruit.
- Stir the mixture together, then cover and let sit in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours (this is really important, because it lets all the fruit and juices truly mix together, creating a much more flavorful drink!).
- When ready to serve, add in the sparkling water to the pitcher, stir again and then enjoy!
TRY IT WITH A TWIST: SANGRITA {SANGRIA + MARGARITA}
If you really feel like spicing it up, try a Sangrita, a Sangria + Margarita in one! It’s essentially the sangria with a shot of tequila – I promise this drink is just as good as it sounds! Following the red wine sangria recipe from above for the base, mix the shot of tequila with the sangria by shaking it in a cocktail shaker and pour over ice. Sip away to paradise and enjoy!
Have you tried a Sangrita before? What do you think?!
